Where does a lack of motivation come from? We know its not just being comfortable because you wouldn’t read an article with this headline if it was. Is it depression? Is it apathy? Is it hopelessness? Maybe. All of those things and whatever plagues your mind comes from one source; fear.
So what are you afraid of? Our lacking motivation comes from our fear to do something and fail at it. Our fear that we are not good enough to do what we need or want to do. Our fear to try again and be no better off than we are right now holds us in a place of perpetual nothingness because subconsciously we tell ourselves it is better not to try than try and fail and fail again.
Our fight or flight reflex is set to protect us from danger, pain, and hurt. That same fight or flight reflex can hold us in place of comfortable nothingness because our experiences have taught us when we try, we fail and when we fail we get hurt. So why get hurt in the first place?
Our feeling of nothingness that holds us captive on a couch or in a bed with no motivation to do anything is painful. It’s just not as painful as the fear that has led us to believe if we try and fail or fail again. Better to not have tried and not been hurt, then try and get yourself hurt again. We tell ourselves we feel bad enough already, that if we were to muster up the courage and go through the efforts again that would be pain we could not handle. We tell ourselves any more pain would be more than we can bear.
A FEAR OF FAILURE LOCKS US IN PLACE
To be frozen with fear is one of the hardest things to overcome. That fear instinct holds us helpless and hopeless in a place of being alive but not living. It drags us deeper into fear with depression and self-hate which is not a nice place to be in.
Ask yourself – are you happy with the way you are right now? It’s doubtful if you are still reading this. Here’s the thing; you are not alone. At no other time in our history have so many been frozen in fear than right now. There are millions of us in the same situation – frozen on our couch, in our bed, in our home afraid of doing any more than we have to to keep the biological life blood flowing through our body but not living.
Between 9/11 and 2020, the world, particularly the media, has ensured we stay where we are. We are told to stay where we are at and stay safe. You don’t need to go outside. You don’t need to get anything. We will bring you all you need at the click of the button. As freeing as technology can be, it has reinforced our lack of need to push ourselves to go and do more. To go and live.
So what in your life has scared you so much that you can’t seem to get yourself off the couch and to go and do something?
LET’S THINK ABOUT THIS
I want you to take a piece of paper, any type of paper, and a pen or pencil and answer the question for yourself:
What am I afraid of? Am I afraid of love again and getting hurt in another relationship? Am I afraid to go and look for another job only to be told again I am not good enough? Am I afraid of going back to school because I am not smart enough? Am I afraid to go out and get sick or killed and die?
What is at the core of the fear that is holding you hostage right now?
Take the time right now (go on, do it. There is a piece of paper right there near you. It could be a napkin, a bill envelope, anything you can write on with whatever you have to write with). What are you afraid of?
WHAT WOULD LIFE LIKE LOOK LIKE WITHOUT BEING FROZEN IN FEAR?
Once you have asked yourself honestly and openly what you are afraid of, I want you to write about what life would look like to you if you were not afraid of this? What would life be like if you didn’t have this fear.
What do you wish you could be doing in life right now? Believe it or not you have the power to make things happen for yourself. You have the power to make your life one you are living and not just existing.
After you have completed the fear and wish writing assignments above, I hope you will be inspired to take it to the next level. Might as well write while you sit there on your ass on the couch. You don’t have to move much. It is just moving your hand with the pen or pencil over the paper.
I have created great writing therapy treatment strategies to help people move forward in their life. No matter what you are struggling to get over, there are independent treatment options available to you right now to get you moving forward. You may not be able to get off the couch today but you can take steps now with writing to ensure you are moving in a direction that will help motivate you to get your ass (large or small) off the couch. Why not start a plan to start living your life instead of just existing.
