THE MIND SPIRIT CONNECTION OF WRITING

I learned years ago that I could get to a place I call a “writer’s high.” Like a runner’s high, it feels like I are removed from myself and it’s like I am having a supernatural episode of sorts – like an out of body experience. The way I describe it is that it is as if my hands are doing the writing but what is filtering through them is not coming solely from me. It is coming from a source bigger than myself. It is as if a spiritual being or spirit (even a holy spirit) has taken over my body and is driving my mind and hands down a road I could not have traveled on my own.

When this has happened, it feels like I am channeling something through me and an intoxoicating sensation washes over me. Have I lost you? I know its not for everyone and not everyone will experience it. If you are really clued in on what your natural talents are in life you have probably felt something like it in similar fashion. The first time it happened to me, I was hooked like it was a drug. I wanted it to happen over and over again.

Regardless of whether you will ever feel my weird-out of body experience for yourself, when you are writing there is a connection between what you are thinking in your head and what your hands are doing to transcribe it. The act itself creates a mind-body experience, if not a wholy mind-body-spirit connection. Writing marries your internal person with the external beingas it brings what is inside you out in the world even if it is for your eyes only.

INSPIRATION: BEING IN-SPIRIT

The late, great Dr. Wayne Dyer ( a mentor of mine) explained the very meaning of the word inspiration is derived from the Latin word “inspiratus.” Defined as “to be in spirit, or to breathe into or blow into or influence.” You have to ask what is it that this breathing into us? The spirit of in-spirit or inspiration? Sometimes called a muse, a conscience or spiritual presents related to our faith is where inspiration comes from. Dr. Dyer emphasised a person’s connection to the spirit or God as being critical to living. To focus on our own ego was to edge (E) God (G) out (O)  or ego.

Regardless of your personal spiritual faith or beliefs, and even void of such a belief it is hard to deny that within all of us is something a muse, a conscience, a spirit or God that speaks to our internal sense of being. Writing is a way to emhance that connection between the mind, body and spirit. It is not to be denied.

FREE YOURSELF

The truth is that in order to heal yourself with writing, you need to find your own ability to tap into that connection. You may not be very comfortable doing that or you may feel like this is too n”new-age” for me. If so, think of it in simpliar terms. Think about the need to free yourself in order for you to take writing and self to the next level.

Honestly, it doesn’t take much thought. As you write about what you are thinking about, a connective occurance is happening on its own without you having to believe anything. The more you allow yourself to feel as you are writing the more likely you are going to take it to another level.

NEED HELP? PRAY, MEDITATE OR BREATHE

To encourage it, feel free to mediate, pray, or focus your breathing to clear yourself from distraction. As humans we hold on tightly  to things like our fears, worries, and anxiety inside our body with negative physical effects. When we pray or mediate, we encourage release of those things holding us back. Our aim needs to be to use our mind-body connection in a positive way. The ultimate goal is to connect mind and body on the present moment and allow our bodies to feel something good through that connection. When we do it, it can be very healing.

COLORING OR ART ENGAGEMENT

Other ways to feel the mind-body-spirit connection can be done through art whether as simple as coloring in a coloring book or mandela or even painting, scupting, or playing music.

When we feel an internal connection to something outside of ourselves, it releases pleasure endorphins that improve our over all mood and feeling. When we feel there is something like a spirit greater than ourselves out there, it enhances our connection to living. It encourages a life for ourself that puts us in balance with what our truest self can be.

WRITING ENGAGES YOUR MIND AND BODY

Writing is a simple tool that can help engage your mind and body to connect with the world, with nature, and with a spirit greater than ourselves. Like it or not, the connection between you and the spirit creates in you hope for a future you could have that is greater than you have already experienced. It can help you overcome past trauma, losses, or tragedy in one of the simplies ways you can find.

I would encourage you to find your way to connecting with your spiritual self through writing. It is a place you will wish to come back to time and time again. In order for you to heal and reap the positive rewards from traumatic events or losses, you need to find emotional meaning through what has happened to you. It is possible to find a positive outcome from even the worst thing that has happened to you.

NO HARM NO FOUL

At the very least, the absolute very least, there is NO study that has ever shown writing of any kind to have a lon-term negative effects. Unlike pharaseuticals’ long list of side effects often listed on ads and commercials, writing can’t hurt you. So you really have nothing to lose to start writing for your health.
